They say you can' t come to Oahu without hiking the famous Diamond Head! So here we go....
Diamond Head is arguably one of the worlds most recognized Volcanic Craters. It has more than a 3500 feet diameter with a 760 foot summit and is a lasting remnant of a volcanic explosion that occurred over 500,000 years ago. Ancient Hawaiians called it Laeahi, which translates to “brow of the tuna.” The name “Diamond Head” can be traced to the 1800s, when British sailors mistakenly thought there were diamonds lodged in the crater’s soil. The “diamonds” turned out to be calcite crystals embedded in the lava rock.
The hike is 0.7 miles up and considered a moderate climb. Thus being Isla's first real hike we were a little hesitant to just how far we would make it. That little munchkin proved us wrong... up she went and didn't complain once!
It was a great first hike for us... well traveled switchbacks, tunnels, stairs and even a World War 2 bunker. Once at the top you have a panoramic view and can literally see forever!
Hawaiian Shave Ice at the bottom makes for happy children and a fast descent :)
